Successful Tax and Accounting Professionals Know You Have to ‘Learn’ It ...then ‘Earn’ It

Written by: Jon Hayes, Executive Director of MTAP

I’ve been in the CPE business for 35 years, and in that time, I’ve repeatedly seen the difference between “learn” and “earn” when it comes to continuing professional education.

Those committed to “learn” seek CPE programs that are timely and comprehensive, while those looking to simply “earn” seek CPE programs that sacrifice depth for a cheaper price.

When I arrived at MTAP in 1986, I quickly learned this association is firmly committed to “learning” and not simply “earning.”

Leaders were hard at work developing programs to educate our members on the sweeping changes in the Tax Reform Act of 1986. This meant spending hours reviewing all available education resources in the industry and established programs that would provide the best and most impactful “learning” possible.

Content was the major consideration as was a fair price for delivering it.

They chose programs from experts Steven Dilley, Jerry Tollefson and GEAR UP, and Michigan State University who delivered programs that packed big conference centers across the state and had thousands of practitioners glued to their seats.

The programs were promoted as “learn it and earn more!” and MTAP delivered.

Here’s what “earners” fail to consider, but “learners” know well:

The key to your success as a practitioner, as a professional, and (for many of you) as a business owner is the ability to arm yourself with the best information and insight the industry has to offer.

Otherwise, you wind up wasting your time and hard earned money on CPE courses that lack depth and fail to grow you as a professional.

As we continue to navigate our way through 2020, our commitment to offering you “learn and earn” is unwavering, even as we deal with a pandemic that has literally turned our country, economy and profession upside down with unprecedented challenges.

This meant MTAP had to quickly pivot from live, in-person delivery of education to an exclusive virtual delivery.

As we made the transition, we were adamant that a virtual delivery retain as much “live” flavor as possible to maximize a participant’s experience. We believe this was achieved by working with our partners at GEAR UP and Checkpoint Learning to provide an interactive, easy-to-use platform that allows presentations to be delivered in real time, just as they would in-person, and for reference aids to be fully accessible and easy to use.

Additionally, the virtual platform allows for posing questions AND getting answers in “real time” whenever possible, and they include 50-minute segments followed by 10 minute Q&A breaks before the next session begins.

Here’s a BIG bonus: participants can save substantially on registration fees!

Compare MTAP Fees with our competitors and you will find ours are lower for top-quality programs that deliver the “learning” to increase your “earning.” AND, we’re able to offer more date options for our popular business entities and 1040 programs so you can better fit “learning” into your busy schedule.

We are also hard at work developing needed education in critical, specialized areas like bankruptcy, business valuation, accounting, technology, professional ethics, and more to ensure you can deliver the best possible service to your clients.

You can learn more about what we’re doing to make virtual education a valuable experience for members and non-members in this blog post.

I’ll leave you with this:

This pandemic has proven that the world we know can change quickly and unexpectedly, and those who fail to pivot get left behind.

The key to pivoting fast and well? Having access to the right tools and information that keeps you one, two, and three steps ahead.

In other words, as the world changes you can be sure that our CPE will be there to help you adapt with confidence.

Lets “learn it and earn it” together in 2020!
